REMEMBERING.. LEST WE FORGET

Apr 25, 2012   //   by Valery Murphy   //   Pastor's Blog

An icy breeze blew across the heads of hundreds of pre-dawn risers, gathered together to remember the fallen soldiers of the wars in which we have been involved as a nation. We stood, together with hundreds of other Australians around the country, at our local cenotaph, uniformed military people and ordinary civilians together, as one, honouring those who have gone before in sacrifice and in order to secure our freedom as a nation.

What is it that enables a person to sacrifice their very life for others?  We wondered and pondered on the question as a lone soldier lifted his bugle and played out The Last Post, piercing the quiet and the cold, ministering to a people and their thoughts. Perhaps the sacrifice of a life laid down for others is out of duty, positioning, or orders.  Perhaps, though, a life laid down could be because of an incomprehensible love for humanity. Perhaps I will be called upon one day to sacrifice myself for the freedom of my friends? The questions hung in the air almost as tangibly as the cold wind pierced us through our clothing….and they waited for an answer.

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

John 15:12-14

The Bible says there is “no greater love” – and that we will be and are called upon to “lay down” our lives for the freedom of others.  As Christians, we are both loved and equipped to love, in the way that Jesus has done.

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

I John 3:16

We gathered today to remember….Lest we forget…..

LORD, don’t let me forget to remember the sacrifice that has set me free is an example to live for others in my world….

SELAH….
