HAPPY SPRING GARDENING!
Spring is amazing in so many ways! I love the newness of what grows in the garden, the fragrance of the jasmin and native plants, the bursting forth of greenery from seeds planted before the season broke…
Of course, spring is a season that demands us to pay attention to the maintenance of all that our garden grows!
Yes!...here come the fresh green shoots which have been long waiting during winter’s cold wind and rain, to sprout from their seed and grow to maturity and bear fruit and more seed!
And with them come the ... weeds! Weeds, weeds and more weeds!
Does anyone get tired of these pesky plants that tend to grow even as you look out over the garden…they are so very fast?
Every spring I determine to get time to move into the garden to maintain and even take back ground from these squatters of nature that inhibit and destroy the vision that I have for my environment. They encroach without permission or respect into the spaces that I have designated to be the bursts of native and imported colour and floral tribute, carefully planned way back last autumn…how dare they!
Today, as I read the book of Mark, chapter 4, I came upon the Parable of the Soils again. That wonderful lesson in the Bible that Jesus talked to us about which illustrates the importance of cultivating our ‘ground’ before we ‘sow’.... Yes, I say the Parable of the Soils and not the Sower. You may not know it as the latter, but I see it as a lesson in preparing the “growing environment” (soil) of our hearts and minds, in order to give optimum opportunity for the ‘seed’ ( the Word of God) to grow into maturity without being prematurely ambushed by… weeds, stones, rocky places, or lack.
- Our ‘soil’ must be cultivated!
- Our ‘seed’ must be watered!
- Our ‘garden’ must be cleared of weeds and intruders and continually ‘fed’ and tended by the ‘food’ that it needs!
How’s your ‘growing’ going, I mean, personally?
It’s not only likely, but a principle echoed in God’s Word, that the ‘food’ that we need spiritually from Him, when sown in the ‘rocky places’ will be received, but not last. PUT YOUR ROOTS DOWN DEEP!
The ‘thorns’ that will crowd the Word of God right out of your life will often be those things that we ‘need’ to do and to pay attention to in today’s world, that eventually become THE PRIORITY, instead of the secondary part of our lives.
As for ‘me and my house, we will serve the Lord”...brave and admirable words, Joshua, but will they be what I use for me and MY house? Well yes! BECAUSE…that’s the point of the good soil, the good environment for spiritual growth, the good direction for me and mine…
...it comes with a decision! We WILL…
And that decision will be like a breath of the air of SPRING…fresh, invigorating, liberating and encouraging!
Happy gardening!
